Uniform Policy

Our development of a uniform policy is driven by a desire to create and promote an environment of learning where dress is not a distraction to the educational process. The motivation for the policy has grown out of the following principles:

  • Our goal is to honor God in all we do, acknowledging the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our choices. All human actions, including outward manifestations such as clothing, reveal and communicate the disposition of the heart at some level. It is our desire to address these heart issues in one uniform policy rather than seeking to anticipate and curb the numerous manifestations of it that surface throughout the year with a looser dress code.
  • Clothing represents the vocational calling of a person, and inherent in the uniform policy is a desire to create an environment where undue attention is not drawn to specific students. The neat appearance created by a uniform enhances a ready-to-learn atmosphere.
  • Uniforms help engender a cohesive presentation of the students in our school. When our students are in uniform it communicates, aesthetically, that they are part of the same team, working toward the same goals. The student is part of a group identity that strives for excellence, and the code establishes a tradition toward that end.
  • The uniform code should save parents money. The uniform code de-emphasizes the social impact of dress and helps focus the students on character and academic issues. The selected clothes were chosen with price and durability in mind for an overall good value.
  • The uniform code addresses security. On field trips, students in uniform aid the teachers in keeping track of everyone. At recess or in the school, teachers and staff can clearly identify students from outsiders.
  • Students are expected to be in uniform while on campus unless specified otherwise by the administration. The administration is responsible for the interpretation of the policy, and the enforcement of the policy is the responsibility of parents, administration, faculty, and staff.

Uniform Guidelines

 Uniform Maintenance

  • Clothing must be clean and in good condition without excessive wear, wrinkles, or holes/tears.
  • Clothing must be appropriately sized for the student. Waistbands must fit at waist, and not be folded or rolled over.

Uniform Modesty

  • Uniforms must be worn in a modest manner, not too tight or too loose. (If the outline of the undergarment can be seen through the back of the shirt, the shirt is too tight.)
  • Skirts and jumpers must be knee-length as measured by the line at the back of the knee.
  • Grammar school girls must wear navy cartwheel shorts under skirts when not wearing tights or leggings (i.e. with knee socks or bobby socks).
  • All shirts must be tucked in.
  • Girls in grades 4-6 must wear a t-shirt or camisole/undershirt under their white dress blouse. Boys undershirts, if worn, must be white.
  • For polo shirts, all but the top button must be buttoned.

Pant Guidelines

  • Shorts may be worn only by lower school boys when the forecasted temperature is 70 degrees or greater.
  • Shorts must not be shorter than a student’s hand width, measured across the palm, above the knee.
  • Belts must be worn with shorts and pants.

Visible jewelry and make-up

  • Grammar School girls may wear one per ear stud earrings and inconspicuous rings (one per hand) and neutral colored watches. Toy jewelry is not permitted. Make-up and nail polish are not permitted.
  • Grammar School boys are limited to rings (one per hand) and metal or neutral colored watch bands only. No toy watches or rings.
  • Logic School young ladies may wear classic simple and discreet jewelry (not trendy). One per ear of earrings. Use the one-inch rule as a guide: if the earring or pendant is larger than one-inch, it isn’t discreet.
  • Logic School young ladies may wear daytime make-up, that is more subtle and incorporates lighter tones. Flesh-tone shades of nail color are also permitted. Dark, heavy eye-makeup is not permitted.

Hair

  • Accessories must be simple and discreet, matching clothing or hair. Scarves and bandanas are not permitted.
  • Hair must be neatly combed (i.e. no faux hawks) and trimmed and of a natural hair color.
  • No facial hair for boys: must be clean shaven.

Shoes and Socks

  • Athletic shoes may be worn for recess and physical education only.
  • Socks must be worn at all times.

Outerwear

  • Outerwear is not permitted in the classrooms. Please wear approved uniform sweaters.
  • Outerwear (e.g. snow boots, coats, hats, mittens/gloves) appropriate for the weather must be brought every day through the winter, as students will go outside for recess and other activities whenever feasible.

Suppliers

Uniforms must be purchased from the designated suppliers or the identical item (same make and style number) from a different source (such as consignment). The designated suppliers must logo all items listed as “logo required” (typically the outermost layer of clothing). Please do not add logos to items that do not require it. Items without a designated supplier may be purchased from any source.

Suggestions for Purchasing

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for logo items to be completed and shipped.

Please be mindful of the wear and tear that clothing will face when making purchasing decisions, especially for boys. We advise that boys have at least three pairs of pants. One of these pairs should be reserved for dress days only to ensure they stay presentable through the end of the year. You may consider dying the pants or hemming them into shorts as they wear.

Be advised that the Land’s End polo shirts do in fact shrink! If your child is between sizes or likely to grow quickly (prek-2nd grade) you may want to order a larger size.

If you choose to order Donald’s uniform pieces online, please know there is a possibility that the item will not be the same brand name as the one in the Eden Prairie store. This could present problems with sizing differences and variances in hues (such as navy socks), but does  not violate the dress code.

Boys shoes do  not need to be a formal dress loafer. Please choose the most comfortable and durable loafer you can find.
